The idea behind the Wave is a subtle movement, a short wave, a simple and modest gesture to the city in order to motivate people to move around and through the bridge. A friendly welcoming boatlike form invites people to an experience over and near the canal. The Wave suggests a clear cycle path where the change of side is signed by a soft curve. The rest of the area on the bridge is given to pedestrian and gathering open spaces that are forming a flowing continuum, allowing orientation and abundant views to the city by being on both sides of the bridge.
In addition, the enclosed spaces (shops, café, stairs, auxiliary) are placed on the spine of the bridge, creating a spatial buffer between the pedestrians and the cycles. The proposed design is handling that variety of choices by being a building form over the sea allowing for flexibility and by introducing levels: Upper Level is to become a station for bikes and people to lounge. Middle (street) Level holds the busiest passage where all movement occurs but people can also hangout at the plaza and small niches. Lower (water) Level is entirely dedicated to the non-busy who want to respite during a busy day close to the canal.
furthermore we can identify the brifge as a “white boat” stationed on the canal as a lightweight two-partite bridge-building will act as a modest monument-landmark for a new era of social cohesion and public qualities.
