Andrés Jaque’s practice explores architecture as an entanglement of bodies, technologies, and environments. As an architect, researcher, and curator, his work explores materiality as transscalar and intrinsically political. Jaque is Dean and Professor at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation (GSAPP) and founder of the New York- and Madrid-based architecture practice Office for Political Innovation (OFFPOLINN). He received his PhD in Architecture from the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. Among many awards, Andrés Jaque is the recipient of the Frederick Kiesler Prize for Architecture and the Arts (2016), the Silver Lion 14th Venice Architecture Biennale (2014), the Dionisio Hernández Gil Prize (2001–2006), a Graham Foundation Grant (2020), and Heinrich Tessenow Stipendiat (Alfred Toepfer Stiftung FVS, 1998–99).
Established in 2003, OFFPOLINN works at the intersection of research, architectural design, and activism, and contributes to a shift from pervasive cultures of asymmetrical exploitation to interspecies alliances, mutual care, and material justice. Current projects include the Babyn Yar Museum of Memory and Oblivion, Kiev; the Ocean Space for the Thyssen-Bornemisza Contemporary Art Collection (TBA21), Venice; and the recently completed Colegio Reggio, Encinar de los Reyes, Madrid. Additional notable projects include Care Home, Plasencia, Spain (2004); Rambla Climate-House, Murcia, Spain (2021); and House in Never Never Land, Madrid (2009). Performance-based, activist works by OFFPOLINN include Being Silica (Performa Biennial New York, 2021); IKEA Disobedients (MoMA, 2012); and Superpowers of Ten (multiple venues, 2016–2019); among others. His work has been exhibited at international venues such as the Cité de l'architecture et du patrimoine, Paris; Lisbon Architecture Triennale; London Design Museum; Oslo Architecture Triennale; Tallinn Architecture Biennale; and the Venice Biennale; Whitechapel Gallery, London; and is included in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art New York (MoMA) and the Art Institute of Chicago, among others.
Andrés Jaque was the chief curator of the 13th Shanghai Biennale (2020), and the co-curator of Manifesta 12 Palermo (2018). His publications include Superpowers of Scale (Columbia Books on Architecture and the City, 2020); More-Than-Human with Marina Otero and Lucia Piestroiusti (Idea Books, 2020); Mies y la gata Niebla. Ensayos sobre arquitectura y cosmopolítica (Puente Editores, 2019); Transmaterial Politics (MCD, 2017); Transmaterial/Calculable (ARQ, 2017); PHANTOM. Mies as Rendered Society (ACTAR, 2013); and Different Kinds of Water Pouring into a Swimming Pool (CalArts, 2013), in addition to numerous articles and essays.
